CyberGhost VPN is another large VPN service that keeps no logs that threaten its users’ privacy. Based in Romania (outside of the jurisdiction of the Fourteen-Eyes spying alliance), CyberGhost allows up to seven devices to connect at once.
CyberGhost’s software allows you to select VPN servers based on the streaming services you wish to unblock. PrivateVPN is a no-logs Swedish VPN service that has a strong focus on privacy. Which makes the fact that it is one of the best services out there for unblocking streaming content pleasantly surprising.
This is because it will issue you a brand new dedicated IP address which is not known to belong to it, and is therefore not blocked, as necessary. Although a great fallback, we did not find this necessary for unblocking Amazon Prime. In addition to two US servers, the PrivateVPN software features special Amazon Prime servers which can unblock the service in Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the UK.
PrivateVPN offers friendly and helpful 24/7 customer support, allows up to 6 simultaneous connections, and will give your money back up to 30-days after payment.
VyprVPN is a great all-round VPN pick for Prime Video. It a no-logs policy and proprietary servers for fast and secure streaming without buffering.

VyprVPN is another great choice for an Amazon Prime VPN. Not only does VyprVPN own and operate all of its own hardware, but there are also optional VyprDNS services. This makes it especially easy to unblock Amazon Prime’s geo-restricted content. Furthermore, by owning their own hardware, VyprVPN offers reliability to its users.
The main downsides to VyprVPN are that it is based in the US. On the other hand, it runs its own CDN network, which results in excellent speed performance. Couple this with its proprietary Chameleon obfuscation (stealth) technology, and you get a thoroughly robust service with great security features. Try out VyprVPN with a 30-day money-back guarantee to fall back on.
Why do I need a VPN for Amazon Prime?
Being a member of Amazon Prime brings many benefits, if you subscribe primarily for the free next-day delivery, you could even view any extras as freebies!
Annoyingly though, Prime members in some countries enjoy access to much larger catalogs of Prime Video and Prime Music titles than those in other countries – notably the United States.
As with Netflix, this is not really the fault of Amazon, which makes all of its own Amazon Originals content available to all customers at the same time. Third-party content creators often impose regional licensing restrictions on their content in order to better monetize their products in different markets.
Using a VPN can fix this by making it appear that you are accessing Amazon from a different country (the United States, for example).
This is possible because a VPN allows you to spoof your location simply by connecting to a VPN server located in the country you wish to pretend to be in.
Can I use a free VPN with Amazon Prime?
There are lots of free VPNs to choose from, but just because they’re free doesn’t mean they’re worth using. Free VPN services that offer unlimited speed and data make you the product by:
- Implementing weak encryption
- Hiding behind invasive privacy policies
- Monitoring and collecting your information
- Selling your data on to third parties
- Possibly infecting your device with malware
They are by no means safe, and can actually do more harm than good, meaning you need to be careful. Fortunately, there are still some great free VPN services available that can would recommend, but they aren’t necessarily suitable for streaming Amazon Prime Video.
The few trustworthy free VPNs would struggle to unblock Prime Video because they cannot keep up with Amazon’s relentless pursuit of blocking IP addresses known for geo-spoofing. And even if you find one that can, these services are usually stripped back versions of premium counterparts, designed to give you a small taste of the paid-for service by implementing data, speed, and server restrictions.
If you’re looking to stream Amazon Prime’s Video and Music catalogs, then a free VPN can lead to buffering, and even stop your streaming altogether. The only way you’ll get proper, guaranteed access to the full Prime library, without any data or speed restrictions, is by using a paid-for service recommended here.
A good VPN doesn’t have to be expensive, so if cost is an issue, there are plenty of cheap VPNs that offer top-quality services. Your mileage may vary with these, however, as these VPNs haven’t necessarily been tested with Amazon Prime’s streaming service. For no-hassle, use our recommended Prime VPNs with their money-back guarantee.
Can I use a VPN browser extension to unblock Amazon prime?
Some VPNs have a browser extension that is available for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and potentially other browsers too. Those extensions are there for one of three primary reasons:
- To allow users to control their VPN app from inside their browser.
- To work alongside the main VPN client to provide WebRTC blocking and prevent leaks.
- To provide a https proxy connection (as opposed to the full VPN tunnel provided by the main app).
If you want to unblock and use Amazon Prime services such as Prime Video, we recommend that you use the full VPN client. This will allow you to pick servers that have been optimized for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Depending on your chosen VPN, it will have numerous servers located in the US and around the world, and it is vital that you communicate with your VPN provider (or check in the app itself) to ensure you are connected to a server that has been optimized for accessing Prime Video.
On some occasions, VPN providers may actually recommend that you use the browser proxy instead (or in addition to) the main VPN connection. This can help to spoof the browser’s location data to help unblock Amazon Prime. This is rare, and your VPN provider will let you know if you need to do this, so contact them.
If all else fails, you can try experimenting with both the full VPN client and the browser extension to see whether it helps to unblock Prime. That said, most of the time it will be better to connect using the main VPN app as this provides the best connection for streaming content on Prime.
How to unblock Amazon Prime
As already noted, to unblock Prime Video catalogs for another country you need to use a VPN and re-register your Amazon account to that country.
It should still be possible to order goods from your local Amazon website and specify your real delivery address, although we don’t know if such deliveries will be covered by your Prime benefits. If things don’t work out, it is easy enough to change your country back again in order to ensure you get your deliveries with Prime.
Because it is the most popular option, we will register in the US for this tutorial, although the process is identical for all countries. Do please check that your VPN provider can unblock Amazon Prime in your country of choice, however.
If you use an Amazon Fire TV stick (or any other Fire OS device) to access Prime content then your choice of supported counties is limited. Please see How to change your country on a Fire TV Stick for more details.
How to unblock Amazon Prime US
To access the full Amazon Prime US catalog you must first re-register your address with Amazon to a US address.
- Sign in to your account on the Amazon web page and visit Manage Your Content and Devices.
- Click on the Preferences tab, then go to Country/Region Settings and click Change.
- You can then change your Country of Residence to the United States. A valid postal address and zip code are required, which you can obtain by simply zooming into a random US location on Google Maps (or using a random postcode generator online).
- Once you’re done, hit Update.
How to pay for Amazon Prime US
To use Amazon Prime US, you may be asked to update your payment details to a payment method registered in the US. If you aren’t already a subscriber, you will also need to pay.
Using a virtual debit card is the best way to do this if you don’t already have a US-registered card. So please click through to our article for more details.
We recommend US Unlocked because it is by far the easiest way to get a US payment method that comes with a valid US address. US Unlocked gives you the ability to pay for US services from just about anywhere outside of America. And a US Unlocked virtual prepaid card comes with a valid US billing address, so that you can pay for Amazon Prime US without a hitch.
How to set up a VPN for Amazon Prime
All the Amazon Prime VPNs that are listed above have excellent VPN apps and so they are easy to set up and use. To set up a VPN for Amazon Prime, simply follow the steps.
- Sign up for a VPN account, install its software, and run. We have detailed guides for installing a VPN in Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and Amazon Fire TV Stick.
- Select a US server. Some VPN services offer special Amazon Prime servers, which are known not to be blocked. With others, you just use any regular server. If regular servers don’t unblock Amazon Prime, then contact your VPN provider’s support team. ExpressVPN, for example, prefers to not openly publish which of its servers work in case they then get blocked. Support will provide a list of servers that are known to unblock Amazon Prime.
- Log in to your Amazon Prime account via the Amazon.com website. You may need to confirm your identity via a code sent to your email address or phone number. Be sure to select your email address.
- Navigate to the Amazon Prime Video or Amazon Prime Music web pages to find – and watch – the content you want!
Does Amazon Prime block VPN users?
Yes. But it only blocks users if their apparent internet address (IP) is known to belong to a VPN or a proxy service. A number of VPN services, such as all the ones listed in this article, offer IP addresses that are not blocked by Amazon.
If you log in to Amazon using just a VPN, however, then Amazon will think you are on holiday. It will allow you to stream titles, but only from a greatly reduced catalog. In order to access the full catalog for the country, you are “spoofing,” you will need to re-register your home location with Amazon.
US residents who are already registered in the US, of course, need only use a VPN to access the full Prime US catalog when traveling abroad.
